A student may enter the Bachelor's degree programme after successful completion of secondary education ending with the matriculation examination and after successful completion of the entrance examination.
A candidate may enter the Master's programme after completing the Bachelor's degree programme in the field of study Arts and being awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts. degree in Arts and successful completion of the entrance examination.
A candidate may enter doctoral studies after completing a master's degree programme in the field of study Arts and being awarded the degree of Mgr. Art. and successful completion of the entrance examination.

Studies in the doctoral study programme Musical Art are focused on the individual development of talent and creativity in the field of musical interpretation and composition, which is represented by a work of art of the highest complexity. The supporting professional topics of the core knowledge of the doctoral study programme are linked to the specifics of the study programme Musical Arts.
The basic condition for admission to the doctoral study programme is the completion of the study programme of the second cycle of higher education in the field of study Arts and successful completion of the entrance examination.

The study part of the doctoral student's study programme consists mainly of lectures, seminars, individual study of specialist literature and individual artistic training necessary in terms of the focus of the doctoral thesis and artistic performance. The studies are carried out under the supervision of a supervisor in accordance with the study schedule and culminate in a dissertation examination and a dissertation artistic performance.

Within 24 months from the beginning of the studies, the student is obliged to take the dissertation examination, the content of which includes the following subjects: Comprehensive Analysis of a Musical Work, Reflection on Musical Culture and Defence of Artistic Performance and parts of the written theoretical thesis. Passing the examination in the theoretical subjects verifies the level of knowledge, skills and competences expected of the student at this level of education. This is highly specialised knowledge, capable of synthesising and presenting one's own views and attitudes on issues in the musical arts. Doctoral studies end with the defence of the dissertation, through which the graduate presents the ability to verbally take a position on the addressed issues in the field of interpretation and creation of the work.

Graduating from the Music Art study programme, the graduate acquires a systematic, coherent and comprehensive set of competences in the specialised field of music art, but above all, he/she comes to know and understand the relationships within the given discipline and interdisciplinary relationships within related artistic disciplines. A deeper understanding of the broader contexts, wide-ranging theories, sophisticated methods and practices in the arts and sciences is in line with modern trends at a level commensurate with international criteria. He is able to apply all the acquired knowledge practically in his specialisation with a significant integration of the acquired knowledge from other professional musical fields. The graduate will acquire comprehensive knowledge, skills and artistic competences that can be used in his/her valuable artistic practice, while being implementable in different musical fields, and in relation to the societal nature of the artistic environment to achieve success both nationally and transnationally.



Graduate of the doctoral study programme in Musical Arts:

  • has acquired an adequate amount of knowledge in the performing arts, composition and theoretical disciplines, to the extent that he/she is able to achieve the highest standards of artistic presentation and composition,

  • is securely versed in current issues in music performance and composition, and is knowledgeable in the legal, ethical and social aspects of artistic activity,

  • master the characteristics of stylistic periods, various techniques of creative practices, and reflect them in the creation of their own interpretative values bringing new artistic impulses, thus becoming a highly erudite and innovative personality in the field of musical art,

  • possesses practical artistic skills at a high professional level and through them interprets and creates works of art of the highest complexity exceeding national standards,

  • is able to participate in research or conduct research in the field of art, authorship and interpretation, and in selected areas of musicology is proficient in "artistic research", is able to draw concise conclusions and implement proposed solutions in his/her own creative work or pedagogical practice,

  • has acquired the competences necessary for independent artistic work, the study of new repertoire and original artistic interpretation and creation in the context of an intercultural approach to art,

  • has a broad insight into related artistic genres and is able to reflect on and implement interdisciplinary overlaps in his/her own work,

  • is able to objectively assess and evaluate his/her own interpretation and creation on the basis of his/her knowledge of tradition and current performance trends, is capable of adequate self-reflection leading to excellence in musical interpretation and creation,

  • is able to propose, identify problems and find creative solutions to them, depending on the available options,

  • is able to verbalise and publicly communicate his/her beliefs and findings in professional debate and to argue adequately at a professional level in professional artistic and artistic-scientific events with international participation, in at least one world language,

  • has mastered the strategies necessary for coping with stressful situations and the specific pressures of presenting their own artistic work to an audience,

  • possesses the social and emotional competences that are a prerequisite for successful performance in leadership positions in artistic bodies, institutions, organisations, etc,

  • has acquired professional competences that enable him/her to give top artistic performances, create timeless compositions, act professionally in advisory bodies, artistic councils, competition commissions, etc.,

  • is prepared to act as a university teacher in the field of music performance or composition,

  • is familiar with the principles of teamwork and is able to lead a team of collaborators, including an international team, in his/her field of activity.

Graduate of the doctoral programme in Musical Arts:

  • acquires the competence to pursue the profession of musical artist - performer/composer at the highest artistic level,

  • is able to work independently in the field of performing arts and composition,

  • acquires the knowledge, competences and competence to perform professionally in top artistic music ensembles, chamber ensembles, opera ensembles, artistic-educational institutions,

  • has all the prerequisites to keep in touch with the development of musical art and to participate in the process of its development, to take and present positions in the field of musical culture and to continue his/her own professional development.

    Its application is primarily as:
  • Concert Artist, Opera Soloist or First Soloist in both domestic and international professional artistic environments,

  • professional music composer,

  • chamber player in professional art ensembles, ensembles in domestic and international professional artistic environment,

The basic condition for admission to the doctoral study programme is the completion of the study programme of the second cycle of higher education in the field of study Arts and successful completion of the entrance examination.

The study part of the doctoral student's study programme consists mainly of lectures, seminars, individual study of specialist literature and individual artistic training necessary in terms of the focus of the doctoral thesis and artistic performance. The studies are carried out under the supervision of a supervisor in accordance with the study schedule and culminate in a dissertation examination and a dissertation artistic performance.

Within 18 months from the beginning of the studies, the student is obliged to take the dissertation examination, the content of which includes the following subjects: Comprehensive Analysis of a Musical Work, Reflection on Musical Culture and Defence of Artistic Performance and parts of the written theoretical thesis. Passing the examination in the theoretical subjects verifies the level of knowledge, skills and competences expected of the student at this level of education. The study programme Composition has a standard length of study of 2 years at the 2nd cycle of higher education in the field of study Art. The study programme is implemented only in full-time form by the full-time method, which consists in teaching in direct contact between the teacher and the student.
The study is primarily based on the student's practical compositional work, from the creation of a concept presented to the teacher, to the final musical work, usually publicly presented, where the emphasis is primarily on the creative process itself.

Graduates of the composition study programme are prepared for the following satellite professions: music dramaturg in theatres and other cultural institutions and music dramaturg of an artistic ensemble, festival, etc. After successful completion of the entrance examinations, a graduate of the Master's degree may continue his/her doctoral studies in a related study programme

Graduate of the Master's degree programme in Composition:

  • is a versatile composer, capable of both independent original creation for any acoustic, electroacoustic, or digital medium, as well as creation applicable to contemporary artistic outputs of audiovisual, theatrical, and new-media culture,

  • possesses high quality artistic as well as theoretical knowledge and skills, which can be applied in his/her own compositional practice,

  • applies the latest knowledge in the field of composition in the creation of a musical work, and can apply it adequately at the level of the master's degree in his/her compositional practice, with emphasis on the use of contemporary compositional techniques,

  • on the basis of knowledge in the field of music-theoretical, music-historical and music-aesthetic disciplines, as well as knowledge in the field of other artistic genres, is able to take and verbally present his/her own opinions on the most current issues related to artistic creation,

  • has knowledge and skills in the field of technological sound processing,

  • has the skills to lead school music ensembles both artistically and organisationally

  • actively works with professional literature (including foreign language literature), is able to search and select information sources adequate to the issue at hand,

  • is able to create works of high artistic value, corresponding to the artistic and aesthetic criteria of contemporary compositional art at the master's degree level

A graduate of the Master's degree programme in Composition acquires the competence:

  • to exercise the profession of a musical artist - composer at the level of the master's degree,

  • to exercise the profession of a secondary school teacher of composition at a secondary art school - conservatory

  • to exercise the profession of a teacher at an elementary school, where he/she is competent to teach composition, music education and to lead school music ensembles,

  • for the performance of pedagogical activity it is necessary to complete the Additional Pedagogical Study, which extends the competence profile just by pedagogical competence;

  • for the exercise of the profession in these satellite professions:

  • music dramaturge in theatres and other cultural institutions,

  • music dramaturge of an artistic ensemble, festival, etc.,

  • after successful completion of the entrance examinations, a graduate of the Master's degree may continue his/her doctoral studies in a related programme of study.

The aim of education in the Performing Arts study programme is to prepare future graduates of the programme in their chosen field of study for professional work in the professions of music performance, for professional autonomous artistic work in solo, chamber and orchestral performance, for the leadership of artistic collectives or, after completing qualification training in pedagogical disciplines, for the profession of a teacher in a primary art school or conservatoire, through the development of the talent and creativity of each student. Successful completion of the Master's degree enables the graduate to continue in a follow-up doctoral study programme at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica or at Slovak and foreign art universities in an equivalent study programme.

A candidate may enter the Master's programme after completing the Bachelor's degree programme in the field of study Arts and being awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the field of study Arts. degree in Arts and successful completion of the entrance examination. The aim of the entrance examination is to examine the level of knowledge, talent, abilities and skills of the applicant in terms of the specific requirements that arise for the applicant from the chosen study programme and the field of study within the Master's degree programme in Performing Arts. Admission to the study programme is subject to the required level of development of musical abilities and performance skills.

The recommended curriculum in the Performing Arts programme allows students to choose from a variety of performance specializations within which to profile their professional competencies. The recommended curriculum includes courses that are divided into the following according to the seriousness of their completion:

  • Compulsory (PP) - their successful completion is a condition for successful completion of part or the entire study programme.
  • Compulsory elective courses (CCE) - the condition for successful completion of a part of the study or the entire study programme is the successful completion of a specified number of these courses according to the student's choice in the structure determined by the study programme.
  • Electives (Electives) - other subjects which the student has the possibility to enrol in order to supplement his/her studies and to obtain a sufficient number of credits in the relevant part of the study.

The Master's degree is completed by a state examination, the content of which is the subjects Diploma thesis and the defence of the diploma thesis and Diploma artistic performance and the defence of the artistic performance. They test the level of competences that the student must demonstrate at the end of the Master's degree. The study is completed by the realization of the artistic performance and its defense and the elaboration of the diploma thesis and the successful completion of its defense.

A graduate of the Master's degree programme in Performing Arts in the field of study Arts has securely acquired theoretical knowledge and highly developed skills and competences related to artistic activity in the form of musical performance. He/she is able to apply his/her professional performance skills and abilities in a professional approach to a musical work, which he/she demonstrates through the creation of his/her own artistic intention, the ability to make an original personal statement and independent creative performance activity. The graduate of the programme reflects on a theoretical level the specific stylistic and aesthetic principles and theoretical-historical parameters in the professional interpretation of a musical work. He/she is able to implement the acquired competences in public professional artistic presentation, to defend his/her concepts and to communicate his/her approach reflecting the context of an authentic historically conditioned and simultaneously created modern artistic space. He has firmly rooted socially desirable professional competencies and a positive attitude towards his profession. Is culturally and linguistically literate in order to develop autonomously and operate successfully in the diverse conditions and environments of the art world.



Graduate of the Master's degree programme in Performing Arts:

  • has acquired adequate knowledge in the field of performing arts and in theoretical disciplines such as history, music theory, aesthetics of music and history of philosophy and is able to use it in professional public performance of a musical work in a specific field of study,
  • confidently navigates current issues in the field of music performance, mastering the specifics of stylistic periods and reflecting them in the creation of their own unique performance values,

  • is proficient in a wide range of repertoire and literature within the chosen field of study, which will enable him/her to realize artistic performance in accordance with different musical styles, or the specifics of different historical periods in the field of professional music performance,

  • independently creates his/her own authorial intention in relation to the stylistic parameters of modern and contemporary interpretation of musical works,

  • is able to organically integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in an interdisciplinary way in professional creative interpretation corresponding to the level of the second level of studies,

  • has acquired the professional competences and technical skills necessary for self-study and independent creative artistic work corresponding to the requirements of the second level of study,

  • possesses a high level of professional competencies that will enable him/her to deliver highly professional artistic performances and to be successful in his/her chosen profession in his/her chosen artistic performance field,

  • is prepared to continue his/her studies at the doctoral level in a follow-up study programme, or after acquiring a pedagogical qualification within the framework of the Supplementary Pedagogical Studies to apply himself/herself also in the teaching profession. 

Graduates of the Master's programme in Performing Arts may, depending on the chosen field of study, find a career as a soloist in instrumental or vocal music performance, as a concert master, choral conductor, choirmaster, leader of an instrumental group or leader of an artistic ensemble, member of professional music ensembles, member of an orchestra, chamber player - member of a chamber ensemble, member of a music group, member of an ensemble, member of a choir, accompanist, also in the audiovisual media, as a manager of cultural institutions, music dramaturge in orchestras and theatres.

The aim of education in the study programme Performing Arts is to professionally prepare future graduates of the programme in their chosen field of study for professions in the field of performing musical arts, for autonomous artistic activity in solo, chamber and orchestral performance and for continuation in a subsequent master's study programme or, after completing the qualification education, for the profession of a teacher of a primary art school.

A graduate of the Bachelor's study programme Performing Arts in the field of study Arts has practical and theoretical knowledge, skills and competences related to artistic activity in the form of musical interpretation. He/she can apply his/her developed performance skills and abilities in a manner indicating a professional approach to a musical work, which he/she demonstrates through artistic vision, the ability to make a personal statement and independent creative performance activity. In addition, the graduate of the programme possesses the theoretical knowledge and skills necessary to understand the essential facts, concepts, principles and contexts in the musical arts, and demonstrates his/her competence by using the basic conceptual categorical and methodological apparatus. The student is able to use knowledge and skills to present musical works publicly, to defend his/her concepts and to communicate his/her approach to them with an understanding of the context of his/her own specialisation. He/she is prepared for the autonomous exercise of his/her profession, as well as for further education and professional development, i.e. he/she has acquired the competences to continue with further higher education. Has developed socially desirable competences and a positive attitude towards his/her profession. Is culturally and linguistically literate in order to be able to further develop and perform successfully in a variety of environments.  



Graduate of the Bachelor of Performing Arts programme:

  • has acquired a reasonable amount of knowledge in the field of performing arts and in theoretical disciplines such as music history, music theory, harmony, musical forms, composition analysis and solfeggio and can use it in the practical interpretation of a musical work,

  • is oriented in current issues in the field of musical interpretation, knows the characteristics of stylistic periods and reflects them in the creation of his/her own interpretative values

  • possesses the quantum of practical skills necessary for the realization of artistic performance in the field of musical interpretation in a specific artistic field,

  • is able to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a professional creative interpretation appropriate to the level of the first degree,

  • has acquired the competences and technical skills necessary for independent artistic work, self-study and creative artistic work corresponding to the requirements of the first stage of studies,

  • possesses social competences which are a prerequisite for cooperation with an accompanist, with other artists in chamber ensembles and in larger artistic ensembles,

  • has acquired the professional competences that will enable him/her to give adequate artistic performances and to be successful in his/her chosen profession in the chosen artistic performing field,

  • is prepared, after successful completion of the entrance examinations, to pursue a master's degree in a related programme of study.


A graduate of the Performing Arts programme, depending on the chosen field of study, can apply as a member of professional music ensembles, as a member of an orchestra, as a chamber player - a member of a chamber ensemble, a member of a music group, an ensemble, a member of a choir, a conductor of a choir, a choirmaster, an accompanist, in specific cases as a solo performer or a solo singer in the field of vocal interpretation, or as a solo singer in the field of vocal interpretation. In addition, in the audiovisual media, as a worker in cultural institutions, as a leader of amateur ensembles, as a music dramaturge in orchestras and theatres

During the course of studies, the graduate will acquire the ability to create a musical work of art, gaining a wide range of creative and practical experience in the field of musical art. Gain the theoretical knowledge and skills to understand the essential facts, concepts, and principles that are closely related to the art of music. Apply this knowledge independently in the analysis and creation of musical works in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the context of his/her specialisation

A graduate of the Bachelor of Music in Composition programme:

  • possesses a wide range of practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of music composition,

  • the acquired (practical and theoretical) knowledge can be applied in the actual creation of a musical work,

  • is sufficiently oriented in the theory and history of composition and is able to use this knowledge adequately in his/her own compositional practice at the Bachelor's degree level,

  • is able to work adequately with specialist literature (both domestic and foreign), to trace and acquire relevant specialist information in order to develop knowledge in his/her own field,

  • is capable of appropriate music-theoretical reflection and verbal interpretation of his/her own work.

Graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in Composition:

  • acquires the competence to exercise the profession of a music composer at the level of the Bachelor's degree,

  • is able to work independently in the field of music composition,

  • has all the prerequisites to keep in touch with the development of musical art, to take and present positions in the field of musical culture and to continue his/her own professional development,

  • for a full university qualification, it is necessary to obtain a second higher education degree and to undergo additional pedagogical training; if he/she has completed an artistic secondary conservatory music education, he/she can also be employed as a teacher at a primary school,

  • after successful completion of the entrance examinations, he or she may continue his or her studies at master's level in a further study programme.
